I’m thinking the term ‘singer songwriter’ should be banned, you know. When using it to describe someone like Josh Weller, it seems offensive. You wouldn’t call Buddy Holly a singer songwriter, would you? Or Tom Waits? Those are two people who’ve definitely had an influence on this kazoo blowing, London-based song smith (is ‘song smith’ even a better term?), though Buddy probably had more luck with the ladies during his brief time on Earth, that’s if Josh’s songs are to be believed at least. Almost all of them seem to be funny takes on the trials of the heart. But it’s self deprecation done in a quirky yet charming way, similarly to how your man Esser operates, and that makes it a-OK with us. Makes it pretty darn good, actually.
London-based 22 year old Josh Weller loves his show tunes. He looks like the lead in a Tim Burton movie version of Fred Astaire's Top Hat. When he discovered records living in Borneo aged 6, it was an esoteric collection of Cole Porter, Mel Torme, Tom Waits, Chet Baker, Irving Berlin and Elvis Costello. Unsurprising, given his lyrical zing and witty acerbic lyrics, Weller says his love of Woody Allen and Richard Pryor is what spawned his passion for writing words. His taut and glaringly observational lyrics about cheating, girls, sex and those moments in life that are funny when they really shouldn't be, atop his quirky, waltzy-pop extend beyond his 22 years and will have you reaching for those Randy Newman records. Josh Weller has been playing in the UK with the likes of The Maccabees, Lightspeed Champion, Mumford and Sons, Beans on Toast etc. and his first single 'Pretty Girls' was released earlier this year.
